History and Context of the Program

The Postgraduate Program in Language Studies / PPGEL, linked to the Department of Human Sciences of Campus I / Salvador / Bahia, State University of Bahia, recommended by CAPES (Official Letter No. 602-11 / 2005 / CTC / CAPES 19/09/2005), was implemented in 2006. The Program offers the Master Course in Language Studies, in the academic modality, with 20 vacancies, filled annually through the Public Selection Process for Regular Students, published in Diário Oficial do Estado da Bahia.

The Program is structured in a Area of Concentration, “Languages: practices and contexts”, to which are articulated 02 Lines of Research: 1) Reading, Literature and Identities; 2) Languages, Speech and Society, with 10 places allocated to each one of them. Based on their specific theoretical assumptions, these lines propose a reflection on the plurality of languages, on the understanding that this is a requirement for teacher education in the area of Literature and the practice of teaching. The research proposal of the Area of Concentration elected privileges the study of the practices of languages, in their different contexts, that are constituted in experiences, meanings and values of identities that are expressed, above all, in the margins of the dominant culture.

The proposal to create the PPGEL emerges from the history of the UNEB, an institution created in 1983 and authorized to operate in 1986, and is responsible, by legal definition, for bringing higher education to regions in the interior of the state of Bahia and taking teacher training for elementary and secondary education, thus marking their social insertion at the regional level. Structured in multicampi form, this IES (Superior Teaching Institute) is present in 24 municipalities of the State, with soothes in Salvador. There are 24 campuses, 01 in the capital and 23 in the countryside of the state, in the different microregions, covering distances ranging from 100 to 850 km from the Central Administration, which is in the capital of Bahia. In these campuses are distributed 16 Degree Courses in Languages and Literature. Always following social demands, UNEB also assumes other forms of intervention in the education of Bahia, establishing partnerships with the State Department of Education and those of several municipalities, in programs for the training of teachers that work in Basic Education, and with the federal government, such as the National Program for Education in Agrarian Reform / PRONERA and the Teacher Training Program / PARFOR / Plataforma Freire.

At the regional level, the social insertion of the PPGEL reflects the multicampia of the institution, already identified in the profile of candidates for the regular student selection process, when graduates from the campuses of the interior of the state, enrolled in regions in need of the post-secondary education system -University graduate. Since its implementation and following the affirmative action policy of the UNEB, PPGEL has expanded its social insertion in its bidding process, reserving 40% of vacancies to candidates who declare themselves black, as established in the Resolution of the University Council / CONSU / UNEB, No. 196/2002, updated in Resolutions CONSU / UNEB No. 468/2007, No. 710/2009 and No. 711/2009. Regarding the number of vacancies offered in the regular student selection process, it is still subject to the terms of Resolutions CONSU / UNEB nº. 468/2007 and 847/2011, a percentage of 10% of overflights, reserved for indigenous candidates that specify the ethnic community to which they belong and prove their ethnic bonding through a declaration issued by a duly recognized indigenous organization. In both modalities of reservation, candidates are required to have completed the entire second cycle of elementary school (grades 5-8) and all high school in public school and have gross monthly family income less than or equal to 04 minimum wages , Proven upon presentation of the documents. Expanding the commitment of social insertion, PPGEL reserved, for the selection process of Regular Student of 2017, 10% of the total vacancies for teachers of Basic Education. In addition to the selection for Regular Student, there is a selection for each Special Semester, with vacancies in the optional subjects of the course, also with publication in the State Official Gazette, on the University and Program website.


At the national level, PPGEL’s social insertion stands out with relevant interinstitutional exchanges in the four-year period, through cooperation agreements, such as the partnership between UNEB / PPGEL and UFMG / POSLIN, the PROCAD / CAPES agreement with PPG Literature, Culture and Contemporaneity / PUC-RIO, IES promoter, and associated teams PPG Literary Studies / PUC-GO and PPG Literary Studies / UEFS / BA. In the four-year period, he joined the Higher Studies Program / CAPES / Visiting Professor, in a network with national and Latin American programs, and began an international exchange with the Center for Literature and Lusophone and European Cultures / CLEPUL / Faculty of Arts / University of Lisbon. In 2014, the DINTER / CAPES Program was closed with PUC-RS, which began in 2010, which awarded a doctorate to 20 UNEB professors. Still with the PUC-RS, a PROCAD / CAPES was established between 2008-2012.

With participation in certified research groups, permanent teachers remain active in teaching, orientation and research, developing projects affiliated to their Research Lines, resulting in productions that ensure consistency in the Program’s proposal. In addition, a significant percentage of teachers completed post-doctoral training (over 50%), a large part of the PROCAD / PUC-Rio and PROCAD / PUC-RS cooperation agreements. Teachers have marked an expressive activity outside the scope of the Program, with participation in relevant academic events and as members of associations or scientific societies.


Objectives (general and specific)

The program aims to provide subsidies for the training of teachers of higher education, based on the contributions of the study of languages, and to provide conditions for planning and carrying out research in this area, in order to prepare researchers.

Egress profile


The profile of the graduates is that of a professional and researcher who, based on the objectives proposed by the Program, critically dominate the theoretical foundations of the area of languages, in response to the challenges posed by the propositions of their Research Lines. This professional should be able to continue research and be able to work in teaching, in Basic Education or in higher education. As can be seen, a considerable number of dissertations deal specifically with issues of interest in Basic Education, such as the use of language in formal education spaces, foreign language teaching, reading practices and literature teaching, waving the possibility Of future publications that serve as didactic material to be distributed to the public school system. In the group of dissertations, essential studies of teacher education, although not directly related to teaching, are relevant to the understanding of the contemporary context, what is expected in a formation: popular speeches, toponyms, social practices of writing, Discursive formations, rhetorical and argumentative processes, languages in digital contexts, new textual genres, verbal and nonverbal languages, emerging literary and artistic productions, new identities, reading and reception practices, media and the intersection between literature and information and communication technologies . These works present articulated approaches to the theoretical and conceptual propositions of the Research Lines.
